Meet Sophie!

Ms. Meedin introduced us to Sophie today!  Sophie is teaching the class all about the life cycle of the penguin and how they survive in the wild.  It was so cute when the kids asked Ms. Meedin, if Sophie flies to the Antarctica every night back home :)  Sophie is sometimes shy and needs the kids to help her feel safe and brave.

Check out the great way Ms. Meedin and Sophie taught the kids about survival in the very cold Antarctica!  The kids were so excited for the Science experiment!

Which hand is protected from the cold Once with blubber or without?

Teachable Moments

Today we had an interesting but well sealed Black Widow Spider for sharing.  I had never seen a real one but had heard stories from my husband from working in a grocery store.  We took the time to let everyone see the Spider (in the jar of course) and talk about how their venom is 15 times worse than a Rattle Snake's.  We also took the time to talk about how to be safe and to tell an adult if they see one.  Thank you Luke for showing us your spider find and we really appreciate how well it was sealed!

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Happy Chinese New Year!  The Year of the Dragon!

Ms. Meedin and the kids decided to create a Dragon.  They did a wonderful job working together to create a creation all together.  Wow, that is no easy job to get all 23 kids to agree and work on one project.

By working together we worked on:

-building our class community
-listening to others ideas
-sharing ideas and problem solving
-voting
-math (deciding how many could be on one side and how to time it to make it fair, which came from the kids)
-being valued as knowledgeable learner!
-waiting for a turn
-getting along with others
-planning ahead and planning with others
-paying attention even when it's hard
-being creative and using their imagination
-use art tools

and many more...

Then it was parade time through the school!

Powerful Readers and Powerful Writers...

We are getting back into the swing of things again!  We have been brainstorming what "Powerful Readers" do since September and now today we have brainstormed how we can be "Powerful Writers".   Here is what we came up with and these are great concepts we will be working on till the end of the year!

In our writing we are setting goals to include "Who", "Where", "What is happening..." and using "Juicy words to paint an Image for our readers."

To be "Powerful Readers" we need to make images in our brain and think about what we are reading while reading it.  Here are some ways we can be "Powerful Readers":

Happy New Year!

Div. 18 is famous at the front of the office!  Look how great they look :) The kids are so proud to have their art up at the front of the school.
