Part 1: We played one of our favourite SmartLearning game Hidden Object. We had the number nine in our basket. Our kids are doing great with asking yes/no questions and drawing conclusions from the clues and information we discover. As Mathematicians we know we need to explain our thinking and explain "How do you know?"
Part 2: Then with our partners we sent and received images by using our coaching cards to give image descriptions...
Part 3: Word work with Math words... In A/B partners they created categories and rules as to why the words are separated in to categories. This was the first time we did this with math words as we have daily activities with our weekly word list, as part of our morning activities. Here are some examples of their categories and rules...
Here they have made two categories based on the number of letters in the words:
Here they have made two categories based math words and number words:
Here they made a number sentence out of the words: 10 - 2 = 8
Part 4: Then we used the picture clues and word clues to come up with their own story prediction.

Part 5: Now we started reading the book, predicting and recreating the number stories.
Number 7 prediction:
30 is three crabs ... or
Number 50 prediction: We folded our paper to make a two part mat so we could create the number 50 two different ways by counting feet.
We discovered that if we know that 4 + 3 = 7 we then know that 40 + 30 = 70. As Mathematicians we look for patterns.
Part 6: Creating our own number sentences with animals and bugs by feet counting:
Part 7: More to come... 3D Math Equations! They had so much fun and did such a great job!
